Seek Him and Be Victorious

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm.” (Mark 4:39)

Are you going through a tough season in life? Perhaps you wonder, “I’m a child of God—so why am I facing these struggles? Why can’t I overcome them?” Do not worry, my dear friend. Storms will come, even for God’s children, as long as we live in this world. Yet our Savior, who is always with us, has already overcome the world. All we need to do is cling to Him, seek Him faithfully, embrace the privileges He has given us, and walk in victory.

The passage in Mark 4:35–41 records an incident of Jesus crossing the Sea of Galilee with His disciples. Jesus knew the Father’s plan for His next assignment and instructed His disciples to sail to the other side. After a long day of ministry, Jesus was exhausted and fell asleep. The disciples were confident, rowing the boat with Him onboard. However, to their despair, a storm hit—a storm so severe that they feared they would drown. Frightened, they woke Jesus, asking if He cared that they might perish.

Jesus rose, rebuked the wind, and commanded the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately, the storm ceased. Then He asked them, “Do you still have no faith?” Despite witnessing His miracles and receiving His promise that they would cross safely, they were shaken when the storm hit.

It is important to note that Jesus initiated the journey; it was entirely God’s will for them to cross over at that time. He knew the storm would come and had given them a promise even before the journey began: “Let us go over to the other side.”

All He expected of His disciples was faith—holding on to the promise He had already given. Instead of approaching Him with faith, they came with doubt, fear, and worry. Yet, He graciously heard their cries.

Many times, we assume that because we are God’s children and Jesus is with us, we will never face storms. But Jesus clearly warned us that we will face tribulations in this world. What He assures us is that we need not fear because victory is already ours in Him. Through Christ, we are overcomers, no matter what trials arise.

When storms hit, we often remain passive, thinking that because Jesus is in the boat, the problem will resolve itself. That is not true. When storms hit, we must do our part to emerge victoriously. We need to act in faith and seek the Lord in prayer. Scripture reminds us, “You do not have because you do not ask God” (James 4:2). Though Jesus is always with us, His power manifests in our lives as we engage with Him through prayer. Otherwise, the resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead—which resides in us—remains dormant, even amidst life’s storms.

If we seek the Lord faithfully in prayer, we will find a way out of any problem we face. Sometimes, reminding God of His promises is enough for Him to act, as it reveals our trust in Him. Other times, when we cannot stand firmly in the Word, crying out to Him is still effective—He will come through. The key is partnership with the Lord in prayer—trusting Him to accomplish what we cannot on our own.

His divine power has given us all things pertaining to life and godliness through His precious promises. Let us claim these promises, seek Him faithfully, and rise victorious in every area of our lives. Amen!
