1 Samuel 16:7

God Looks at Your Heart

“But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” — 1 Samuel 16:7

Have you ever been in a situation where people abandoned you? Have others looked at your past or background and treated you unfairly or looked down on you? Perhaps you feel misunderstood by many. Do not worry, my dear friend. Keep seeking God diligently. At the right time, He will lift you up.

First Samuel 16:1–13 records the beautiful event of how Samuel anointed David as the next king of Israel. Jesse brought his sons before Samuel, but David, the youngest, was left in the fields looking after the sheep. Imagine that—the prophet of God had come to anoint one of Jesse's sons, yet David was not even called; he was not even considered by his own family.

When Samuel saw Eliab, Jesse's firstborn, he thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” Samuel was impressed by Eliab's outward appearance, but God corrected him: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

During this time, though overlooked by his family, David was faithfully caring for his sheep, worshipping God, and playing his instrument in the fields. God was preparing him for something much greater. What looked insignificant to others was deeply important to God. His season in the wilderness was not wasted; God was using that time to prepare him for the calling on his life.

In the end, everyone had to wait until David arrived from the fields. When David came, Samuel was not excited or acting on his own emotion; he simply followed God's instruction and anointed him as king.

God did not only choose David; He also turned his rejection into a moment of honor. Samuel and Jesse's family had to stand and wait until David arrived. They were not even allowed to sit down until he came. God honored David in the very presence of those who had overlooked him.

Samuel was a renowned prophet who was deeply in tune with God. First Samuel 3:19 says, “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.” Yet, God did not reveal David’s identity to Samuel immediately. Instead, He instructed Samuel to go and wait until He indicated the right son. God had a purpose in arranging everything this way: He wanted David to receive the honor prepared for him at just the right time.

The glorious truth here is that even when David's family overlooked him, and even when the prophet sent to anoint the next king initially had different expectations, God did not fail him. People had passed David by, but God had not.

My dear friend, perhaps you are in a season where people have rejected or misunderstood you. There may be times when even those you expect to understand you do not. You might wonder, “Lord, if You have called me, why does nobody see it?”

Remember David. People’s rejection did not cancel God's plan. Their opinions did not alter God's purpose, and their inability to see David's worth did not diminish his value in God's eyes.

People see your current state, but God sees the beautiful plan for which He created you. People see your mistakes, but God sees your willingness to depend on Him and rise again with His help. People may judge quickly, but God views you through unfailing love, mercy, and kindness.

During seasons of rejection, do not lose heart. Trust in the Lord and seek Him day after day. Like David, continue to worship Him and faithfully tend to what He has entrusted to you. Human rejection could not stop God's plan for David, and your present situation cannot cancel God's purpose for you.

As Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.”

Keep trusting Him—He has not forgotten you. At the right time, He will lift you up in ways you cannot imagine.

God bless you!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing my heart and knowing me completely. When I feel rejected or overlooked, help me to trust You. Strengthen me to seek You diligently, remain faithful, and wait for Your perfect timing. Fulfill the beautiful plans You have for my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Verse

“But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” — 1 Samuel 16:7

Remember

This devotional based on 1 Samuel 16:7, reminds us that while people may look at our outward appearance and circumstances, God looks at our hearts and sees the purpose He has for us. Just as David was overlooked by others but chosen by God at the right time, our rejection and present circumstances cannot cancel God’s plan for our lives.
