Sacrifice of Praise

"I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth." — Psalm 34:1 (ESV)

Are you going through a tough season in life? Are you continually facing challenges from others? Perhaps the enemy, the devil, has raised people against you, and they are continually twisting your words and seeking your downfall. Do not worry, my dear friend. God sees everything that you are going through and keeps an account of every pain and sorrow that you endure.

No matter how terrible the season you are in, choose to praise the Lord. The Bible repeatedly admonishes us to continually praise the Lord and offer sacrifices of praise. Praising God continually means deliberately choosing to praise Him in every season of life. It is easy to praise God during good seasons, but when you choose to praise Him in difficult seasons, contrary to your feelings and in the midst of pain, it becomes a sacrifice of praise. Everything within you may cry out to murmur, complain, and wail in sorrow, but when you choose instead to praise Him, it pleases God and rises before Him as a sweet fragrance.

First Samuel 21 records an incident when David was in distress and going through a terrible season in life. He was fleeing for his life through caves and strongholds as King Saul pursued him out of jealousy.

Seeking refuge, David fled to Gath, hoping to find safety under King Achish. However, he was recognized as the one who had defeated Goliath and was considered a threat. Scripture records in 1 Samuel 21:10–12 that David took their words to heart and became very much afraid of the king of Gath. They even twisted his words and plotted against him, as David later recorded in Psalm 56:5.

Instead of finding refuge, David appeared to have fallen into the hands of an enemy king. To save his life, he resorted to acting like a madman—scratching on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.

It was at this juncture that David wrote Psalms 34 and 56. In Psalm 34, he sings about how God was faithful to him and what he experienced during that season. In Psalm 56, he records the prayer he prayed in the midst of his fear.

It is beautiful to see how David, in the midst of shame, fear, and overwhelming danger, chose to praise God and encouraged others to do the same. God accepted his sacrifice of praise, strengthened him to pray specifically, and answered him. He was protected from his enemies and eventually delivered from all his troubles.

David later encouraged others to "taste and see that the Lord is good." Above all, his sacrificial praise pleased God, and he experienced the love, joy, peace, and faithfulness of God in a deeper way, which strengthened him to endure that difficult season.

My dear friend, whenever you face challenging situations—whether you are terrified by an opposing enemy like David, highly discouraged, or going through various trials—remember that God is on your side, willing to help you. The enemy may try to discourage you by reminding you of your mistakes and faults. Remember, Jesus came in search of the lost sheep. All have gone astray and fallen short of God's glory. He knows your human weakness and came to rescue you. He paid the price for all your sins and iniquities. Once you repent and seek God wholeheartedly for forgiveness of any sin, He is faithful to blot it out from His records. People might still label you and call you a sinner. But your loving Savior, who shed His blood and gave His life for you, has thrown that sin far away, as far as the east is from the west.

All you need to do is keep aside the shame, guilt, and pain, and put on the garment of praise. Thank God for His goodness in your past and praise Him, trusting that no matter how difficult or painful your present situation may be, when you commit your life to Him and offer sacrifices of praise, God will be pleased with you.

He will manifest Himself to you in a profound way. He will fill you with His unspeakable joy, and you will be strengthened, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. As you continue to seek Him faithfully, you will be able to pray with confidence, just as David did, and answered prayer will be your reward.

Whatever you are going through today, make a decision to praise God, for we are admonished to do so in Hebrews 13:15:

"Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name." — Hebrews 13:15 (ESV)

Even if you do not see your situation change immediately, God will strengthen you with His love, joy, and peace to withstand your battles. In His perfect time, God will be faithful to deliver you, and you too will be able to testify with David, "Taste and see that the Lord is good."

God bless you!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to You today asking for Your grace to keep trusting You and to offer continual praise to You in every season of life. As I commit myself to praising You, strengthen me for every battle that I face and help me please you and experience Your goodness in my life. Be with me and guide me all the days of my life. Amen.
