Make Room for Jesus in Your Empty Boat: From Exhaustion to Overflow
3 Minutes Read
Luke 5:4–6, NIV

“When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.”
The passage in Luke 5:1–11 records an incident in which Peter and his companions experienced a miraculous catch of fish after encountering Jesus.
Simon Peter, along with James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were fishermen and partners in the same trade. They had likely spent many years in this profession, experiencing both success and failure—days of abundance and days of emptiness.
But on this particular day, their efforts ended in complete disappointment. They had worked all night, using all their skill, strength, and experience, yet caught nothing. Their labor was in vain. There was no rest, no profit, and no result.
As morning came, they were tired and discouraged. They began cleaning their nets, preparing to return home empty-handed.
It was at this moment that Jesus arrived. He had been ministering to the crowd, who had gathered to hear the Word of God. Seeing two boats by the shore—one belonging to Peter and the other to James and John—Jesus stepped into Peter's boat and asked him to put out a little from the shore so He could teach the people.
Peter could have refused. He could have chosen to go home, consumed by disappointment and exhaustion. Instead, he made room for Jesus. Even in his lowest moment, he offered his boat.
Jesus taught the crowd, and when He had finished, He did not overlook Peter, who had made room for Him. Knowing Peter's struggle, Jesus told him to launch out into the deep and let down the nets for a catch.
Once again, Peter had a choice. He could rely on his experience—which had failed him all night—or trust the word of Jesus. He chose obedience. Humbly, he replied, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Then he cast his nets as instructed.
When he obeyed, something supernatural happened. To his amazement, he caught such a large number of fish that his nets began to break. The blessing was so great that Peter had to call his partners, James and John, to help him. Together, they brought in a miraculous harvest.
Even after the miracle, Peter remained humble and expressed his unworthiness before Jesus: “…he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’” (Luke 5:8)
My dear friend, today you may be in a situation where your efforts and expertise have failed. You may feel like giving up. Do not lose hope.
All you need to do is invite Jesus into your situation. Make room for Him in your life, just as Peter made room for Him in his boat. Prioritize spending time with Him, listening to and meditating on the Word of God, and seeking His direction.
When He speaks, choose obedience—even when His instructions do not seem logical. He may guide you through Scripture, a quiet prompting in your heart, or the circumstances He places before you.
As you walk closely with Him, you will discover that much of your struggle was unnecessary. He will direct your steps. In the very place where you experienced failure and shame, He will astonish you with unexpected abundance.
“He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
So, humble yourself before the Lord. Make room for Jesus every day, trust His Word, and walk in obedience. As you do, He will transform your exhaustion into overflow, shame into glory, emptiness into fruitfulness, weakness into strength, and your life into a testimony of His glory.
Let your life reflect His glory so that the world may know that Jesus lives.
God bless you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, today I humble myself and come into Your presence. I place my situation (name your situation here) into Your hands. I choose to seek You diligently and commit to making room for You in my daily life. I long to be in Your presence and need Your guidance to live an overcoming life. Help me to hear and obey Your voice, and make me a blessing to others. Thank You, Lord, for hearing me and answering my prayer. Amen.
