Luke 24:30–31

Your understanding will be enlightened!!

“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him...” (Luke 24:30–31)

The passage in Luke 24:13–35 records the incident where Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Looking back at the background: following the crucifixion of Jesus, His disciples were perplexed and in a hopeless state, as they once believed Jesus to be the Messiah. On the third day, to their astonishment, the women in their group who went to the tomb of Jesus brought the news that they had encountered angels who asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” They were all unable to believe this and were gripped with fear and confusion.

With heavy hearts, two of the disciples, on their way to Emmaus from Jerusalem, were discussing these happenings. Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them, but they were kept from recognizing Him (Luke 24:15). Understanding their despair and wanting to comfort them and clear their misunderstanding, He involved Himself in their discussion. Perhaps He explained to them that all that had happened was foretold about the Messiah by the prophets. Furthermore, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself (Luke 24:27–28). Yet, they were blinded in their minds and could neither recognize Him nor understand the Scriptures concerning Him.

However, to their advantage, they invited Him to stay with them. Accepting their invitation, Jesus stayed with them. When they were at the table, perhaps for dinner, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. At this crucial moment, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. Following this, they were able to remember and understand all that He had explained while they were walking. Though their hearts were burning while He was explaining the Scriptures to them on the road, only after their eyes were opened were they able to fully grasp it.

My dear friend, maybe you are going through situations in your life that have brought about confusion, fear, hopelessness, or despair, and you are looking for answers to your problems in the Scriptures. Or maybe you are longing to understand the Scriptures to know the Lord more deeply. The Bible records in 2 Corinthians 3:14–16:

“But their minds were made dull, ... Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”

The veil that kept you from knowing the Lord is taken away the moment you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Today, even though the risen Jesus is not physically present on earth, He has not left you as an orphan, for He has sent the promised Holy Spirit to live within your heart and teach you all things. And your heart will keep burning at all that He speaks. However, you may not be able to fully grasp it, as the eyes of your understanding may not yet be enlightened. If you desire a fuller revelation of the Scriptures—one that impacts and transforms your life—you need to invite the Lord into a closer relationship rather than keeping Him as a distant acquaintance, just as the disciples’ eyes were opened when they invited Jesus into their home to stay with them, cultivating a deeper fellowship with Him.

Today, the Lord longs to reveal Himself to you in a profound way. If you make a conscious decision to spend quality time with Him and cultivate a deeper level of intimacy with Him, you will be built up as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:22). He will enlighten the eyes of your understanding, and revelation from the Scriptures will spring up from within you. The blindness in your mind will be removed, and you will experience the peace of God that surpasses understanding.

Let the cry of the psalmist, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Psalm 119:18), become the cry of our hearts today!!

God bless you!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the wonderful treasure in Your Word. Today, as I commit myself to cultivating a deeper relationship with You, help me to pursue it. Open the eyes of my understanding and help me to glean from the Scriptures. Holy Spirit, teach me and quicken me. Amen!
