Get Up, Take Your Mat, and Walk in Freedom

“Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’
….
‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.’
He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’”

Are you feeling stuck in your walk with God? Do you feel paralyzed and unable to move forward in any area of your life? Perhaps you have lost hope and even stopped trying to overcome your circumstances.

The Gospel of Mark, chapter 2, records an event where a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus for healing. Jesus was surrounded by such a large crowd that there was no room left in the house. The four men carrying the paralyzed man were so desperate and full of faith that they were determined to get him to Jesus, no matter what it took.

Out of desperation, having no other answers and hearing reports that Jesus healed all who came to Him, these men brought the paralyzed man in faith. Refusing to give up, they made a deliberate choice to dig through the roof and lower him right down in front of Jesus.

Jesus was moved by their faith and said, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Then, after addressing the naysayers present, He commanded, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” The man immediately obeyed. Everyone gathered was filled with wonder and praised God. This man’s healing brought awe to the crowd and glory to God.

The root cause of his physical paralysis was sin. Once Jesus forgave his sin and dealt with the primary cause, the physical manifestation of that spiritual issue vanished.

My dear friend, if you are facing a barrier that is hindering your blessing, healing, or breakthrough—or if you are experiencing dryness in your walk with God, where your devotional time has dwindled and God feels far away—pause and examine your heart.

It could be that an external problem stems from a hidden root cause that needs to be addressed. As human beings living in a fallen world, our flesh constantly pulls us away from our saved spirit, which longs for fellowship with God. There is an ongoing tug-of-war between our spirit and our flesh. The spirit is willing toward the things of God, while the flesh pulls toward the world. We can only live a holy life when we walk in the Spirit and refuse to yield to the flesh.

When we are out of sync with God, we fall short. Yet God, in His infinite mercy, continues to draw us back to Himself because He understands our weaknesses. It is crucial that we yield to Him and examine our hearts regularly to keep ourselves free from anything that displeases Him.

First John 1:7–9 speaks directly to this:

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Sometimes, when reading this passage, we assume John is addressing unbelievers about initial salvation. However, First John was written to believers. The purpose of this epistle is clearly stated in 1 John 2:1:

“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”

John emphasizes the daily cleansing necessary for believers living in a fallen world. We enter the Kingdom of God by believing in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Jesus paid the price for all our sins, iniquities, and transgressions. When we appropriate this truth by confessing our sins and receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we become children of God.

As children of light walking out our faith, there are times when darkness tempts us. Though a righteous person falls seven times, he rises again (Proverbs 24:16). God has made a provision for us to be cleansed from sin and freed from spiritual paralysis. That provision is simple: appropriating His forgiveness by confessing our sins, turning away from anything that grieves the Holy Spirit, and being washed by the blood of Christ. This restores our fellowship with God and releases us from paralysis in other areas of life—paving the way for healing, breakthrough, and spiritual freedom.

Today, take time to examine your heart. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth, and ask Him to reveal anything that may have grieved Him. If the Lord brings something to light, confess it and take hold of His grace to overcome it—for Scripture reminds us that no one born of God makes a practice of sinning (1 John 3:9). Ask God to cleanse you with His blood and set you free.

Experience the purifying power of the blood of Jesus today, and walk in total freedom from every form of paralysis. Even if something seems minor, bring it to Him so that your freedom may bring honor to His name.

Be blessed and bring glory to His name.

God bless you!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to You today, asking You to search my heart and reveal anything that grieves You. I confess my sins and plead the cleansing power of Your precious blood to purify me from all unrighteousness. Set me free from spiritual paralysis and help me walk in holiness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Remember

This devotional from Mark 2:3–12, reminds us of the importance of examining our hearts, confessing our sins, and experiencing the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus. Just as Jesus forgave the sins of the paralyzed man and commanded him to get up and walk, may we also allow the Lord to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, restore our fellowship with Him, and set us free from every spiritual paralysis that hinders our walk with Him.
